Celebrities For Breast Cancer Awareness

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month and ESSENCE.com will be highlighting woman and celebrities that are championing the disease. See how Black Hollywood supports breast cancer research and the charities they are involved in.

01As Breast Cancer Awareness Month kicks off today, ESSENCE.com salutes those celebs who are crusading against it and those who have survived this deadly disease that claims more African-American women’s lives than any other race.

Gabrielle Union, ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s
Circle of Promise, joins more than 25,000 participants, including 1,600
breast cancer survivors, at the Susan G. Komen New York City Race
for the Cure in Central Park on September 13, 2009. The 5K run/walk
event’s goal was to raise more than $6 million for breast cancer research
and community outreach programs.

02Actress and singer Queen Latifah struts her stuff for the fourth annual Revlon Run/Walk for Women on May 5, 2001, in New York City. The event raises funds for breast and ovarian cancer research.

Since then the star has been actively involved with breast cancer awareness organizations like the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
