Let’s talk about Samsung phones with wireless charging and how the feature works. Wireless charging is not a new innovation but it has just only started becoming a thing in smartphones a few years back. The technology is not yet matured but it has improved year over year and manufacturers only put it on their flagship devices at this moment.

The first smartphones with wireless charging are the Samsung S6 series and almost all their flagship phones since then have come with this charging feature. Even now, wireless charging is only available on Samsung S series and Note Series.

With wireless charging, you will be able to charge your phone without using physically plugging a cable into the charging port using electromagnetic induction.

So, how does this work, you might ask? Well, it involves the use of a silver-plated copper coil that both the phone and charging pad has.

When you placed the part (usually the back) that contains the coil on the part of the pad that contains the coil, an electromagnetic field is created from which the phone generates an electric current which it then uses to charge its battery.

Just like normal charging, wireless charging has different standards but the most common one is Qi charging and it is the same one being used on Samsung phones.

Some of the phones with this technology also have reverse wireless charging which allows you to charge other devices such as phones, wireless earphones, smartwatches, etc.

It is hard to expect a wireless charging of like 45 Watts from Samsung when even the Samsung phones with the fastest wire charging are at 45 Watts. Hopefully, things will change in 2023.

Top 4 Samsung Phones with Wireless Charging
1.) Samsung Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra

The S22 series which comprises of Samsung S22, S22 Ultra, and S22 Plus are among the best flagship phones you can get your hands on in the US today.

The trio also supports Qi/PMA wireless charging standard with up to 15 watts of charging speed. Not just that, they also support reverse wireless charging of up to 4.5 watts.

A device with reverse wireless charging can be used to charge another device. This feature is most often used to charge smaller devices such as the Galaxy Buds and Watch.

While the Galaxy S22 series phones have the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Processing power (here in the US) and run on the same One UI based on Android 12 (currently upgradable to Android 13) out of the box, there are some discrepancies between them as well.

The S22 and S22 Plus are similar in a lot of ways including in design but they both differ from the S22 Ultra.

Samsung S22 is 6.1 inches in display size and 2340 x 1080 pixels in screen resolution. Its Dynamic AMOLED display panel features a 120Hz high refresh rate, 1300 nits peak brightness, and HDR10+.

Samsung S22 Plus on the other hand is a 6.6-inches device also featuring a 2340 x 1080 pixels screen resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and HDR10+. However, its Dynamic AMOLED panel has a peak brightness of 1750 nits.

Both the S22 and S22 Plus are equipped with 3 cameras at the rear which include a primary 50MP lens with OIS, 12MP ultrawide, and 10MP telephoto with OIS, and 3x optical zoom. Their front camera is a 10MP lens.

Now to the Samsung S22 Ultra. It is a big screen smartphone with a Dynamic AMOLED panel, 6.8-inches screen size, 3088 x 1440 pixels screen resolution, 120Hz high refresh rate, and 1750 nits screen brightness.

Unlike the triple cameras on the S22 and S22 Plus, the S22 Ultra has 4 camera set up at the back which comprises of a 108MP Primary camera with OIS, 12MP Ultrawide camera, 10MP Telephoto lens with OIS and 3x optical zoom, and 10MP Periscope telephoto camera with OIS and 10x optical zoom.

The S22 Ultra uses a 40MP front-facing camera.

Battery capacity is 3700 mAh for S22, 4500 mAh for S22 Plus, and 5000 mAh for S22 Ultra.

2.) Samsung Galaxy S21, S21 Plus, and S21 Ultra

Even though these devices were launched back in 2021, they are among the top Samsung phones equipped with wireless charging technology. The series comprises of Samsung S21, S21 Ultra, and S21 Plus.

Like the S22 series, the S21 series supports 15 watts of wireless charging with Qi/PMA standards. And also has 4.5 watts of reverse wireless charging allowing you to wireless charge other devices.

The variant of these three devices available in the US is powered by Snapdragon 888 5G processor and currently runs on One UI 4.1 based on Android 12.

Samsung S21 5G is packed with a 4000 mAh battery capacity. It is a 6.2-inches Dynamic AMOLED device featuring a 2400 x 1080 pixels screen resolution. It has a high refresh rate of 120Hz and a peak brightness of 1300 nits.

The S21 is equipped with a triple rear camera which comprises of 12MP Primary camera with OIS, 12MP ultrawide, and 64MP Telephoto with OIS, 1.1x Optical zoom. The front camera is a 10MP lens.

Samsung S21 Plus 5G is packed with a 4800 mAh battery capacity. It is a 6.7-inches Dynamic AMOLED display smartphone with 2400 x 1080 pixels screen resolution, 120Hz high refresh rate, and 1300 nits peak brightness.

The S21 Plus has the same camera setup as the S21 both at the rear and on the front side of things.

As for the Samsung S21 Ultra 5G, it is packed with a 5000 mAh battery capacity. It has a big 6.8-inches screen size with a 3200 x 1440 pixels screen resolution.

Its Dynamic AMOLED panel supports a 120Hz high refresh rate, up to 1500 nits peak brightness, and HDR10+ (like the S21 and S21 Plus).

The Samsung Z Fold4 with 4400 mAh battery capacity supports 15 watts of wireless charging and 4.5 watts of reverse wireless charging.

Z Fold4 when unfolded is 7.6 inches in screen size but when folded, you will only be able to use the 6.2-inches display. Both displays are of Dynamic AMOLED panel.

The unfolded screen has a screen resolution of 2176 x 1812 pixels while the folded display has a resolution of 2316 x 904 pixels. The peak brightness of the unfolded screen is 1200 nits.

This device is powered by Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and runs on One UI 4.1.1 based on Android 12L at launch.

At the rear, Galaxy Z Fold4 is equipped with a 50MP Primary camera with OIS, a 12MP Ultrawide camera, and 10MP with OIS and 3x optical zoom. Its front-facing camera is 10MP when folded and 4MP (under-display) when unfolded.

It uses 12GB of RAM with internal storage options of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.

4.) Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4

Samsung Z Flip4 is packed with a 3700 mAh battery capacity and 15 watts of wireless charging support. It also supports 4.5 watts of reverse wireless charging.

It is a 6.7-inches Dynamic AMOLED display device when opened and when folded, it has a 1.9-inches Super AMOLED cover screen.

Galaxy Z Flip4 screen resolution is 2640 x 1080 pixels when opened and 512 x 260 pixels when folded.

Its display when opened has a 120Hz high refresh rate, 1200 nits screen brightness, and HDR10+ support.

Z Flip4 is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip powering the Z Fold4 and runs on One UI based on Android 12 out of the box.

It has two rear cameras which comprise of 12MP primary camera with OIS and a 12MP ultrawide camera. Its front-facing camera is 10MP.

It is equipped with 8GB of RAM and has internal storage options of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.

Final Thought

Until the launch of the Google Pixel in 2020, it was believed that your phone must have a glass back for wireless charging to work, well not anymore. However as there are advantages to wireless charging, there are also disadvantages.

Some of which you can easily avoid such as the charging speed. Most of the latest Samsung phones with wireless charging support of up to 15 watts (not that it is very fast) but that is only if you use a wireless charging pad made for Samsung.

Other disadvantages include:

* You cannot use the phone while charging it because immediately after the coils are no more aligned, the device stops charging. Which to some extent is not really a disadvantage in the sense that you are not even supposed to be using your phone while charging.
* It is slow. If you buy a charging pad that is not for Samsung phones, the charging speed will be 5 watts. Even if you do have a compatible pad, the highest it can go at least for now is 15 watts. Compare that with 25 watts and 45 watts of normal charging.
* It can damage items with magnetic stripes such as your credit card. This can happen if you are charging through a case and the case houses any of those items.

It is worth stating that wireless charging is still only available on Samsung flagships. The S, Fold, and the Note Series. I will like to see it in the A series, especially the upper mid-range segment.
