5 Things You Cant Do With Your PS5 VRR 1440p Monitor Support And More

The PS5 has officially launched in India, and many gamers finally have their hands on the new system. While the library of exclusive games for the PS5 is limited, a lot of PS4 games have been updated to take advantage of the new console and are definitely worth a revisit. The PS5 brings with it a set of unique and interesting features, especially when it comes to the DualSense Controller. The console also supports HDMI 2.1 bringing support for 4K 120FPS, and ALLM. The PS5 also supports 3D audio. It can be experienced by plugging a pair of headphones into the controller. Even though the PS5 has a host of features, there are a few places where the console falls short. Here are a few things you cannot do with the console. Some of these features will be made available at a later date.

Expandable SSD storage
Even though the PS5 (review) has an M.2 SSD slot for storage expansion, the port is currently locked and cannot be used. Sony will unlock the expansion slot in the future. Until then you will be limited by the 667 usable built-in SSD storage for native PS5 games. However, you can keep your PS4 games on an external USB drive and play them from there. You can also use the external drive as the default location to download and install backwards compatible games. It isnt clear hen the expandable SSD storage option ill be unlocked for the PS5.

Backup PS5 games on an external drive
Sticking with storage, users cannot backup their PS5 games to an external drive. If you fall short of built-in storage, you will have to delete your games and redownload them. It would be nice to be able to backup ones PS5 games on an external drive and copy them back when you need to play the game. Whether this feature makes an appearance on the PS5 in the near future remains to be seen.

3D audio on home theatres and TV speakers
3D audio is Sony’s surround sound technology and can be experienced in games like Astro’s Playroom, Demon Souls and more. Plug a pair of headphones (yes, any headphones will do) into the controller and enjoy surround sound. During the PlayStation 2020 GDC talk, Sony did say that the feature would make its way to TV speakers along with soundbars and home theatres. The timeline for this hasn’t been set.

VRR support for the PS5
While the PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 features like 4K at 120Hz and ALLM, it does not support VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). To put things into perspective, this feature is available on the Xbox Series X (review) at launch. Sony has confirmed that the feature will make its way to the PS5 via an update in the future.

PS5 1440p monitor support
You can connect the PS5 to any TV. Be it an HD ready TV to get a 720P output, a 1080p TV to get FHD output and to a 4K TV for UHD output. But you cannot connect the console to a 1440p display and get native 1440p output. Considering games like Control: Ultimate Edition has a 1440p resolution, it would be great to exploit the resolution on a 1440p monitor. Alas, this isn’t the case. The Xbox Series X supports 1440p monitors natively. Sony has said that if they see enough demand for the feature, they may consider it. So it isnt clear if we will ever get support for 1440p monitors on the PS5. One thing to note is that if you connect the PS5 to a 1440p monitor, the console will output at 4K and give you a supersampled image on the 1440p monitor. You can learn more about it here.
