So, how many characters are available in Apex Legends? Apex currently has 19 Legends to choose from, each equipped with a unique set of strengths and abilities.

Best Pairings for Every Apex Legend

As Apex Legends has expanded in both character count and map variety it’s become increasingly difficult to definitively select the best team compositions in the game. Since you cannot control the Legends chosen before you, it may be best to focus on things you can control by learning how each Legend can fit within a given squad and how Legends complement one another so you can help stitch up a cohesive squad with your Legend pick.

Still, despite the list below you should always place heavy importance on your own playstyle, your preferences, and additional information such as your teammates’ strengths, current map, and Playlist-modifiers.

The unforgiving simulacrum, Ash is capable of driving engagements and hunting down enemies. Ash’s Passive Marked for Death gives her a component of Recon that, in the Offensive category, can only be matched by Wraith’s Voices from the Void Passive, though, Ash’s Recon ability is notably better. Ash’s Phase Breach Ultimate provides you and your team with decent mobility to quickly breach the gap between you and your prey.

Legends Compatible with Ash
* Revenant * Revenant’s Ultimate is immensely effective when paired with Legends that offer team-wide mobility. Ash can use her Passive to find recent gunfights and once enemies are identified, Revenant’s Death Totem allows the team to push with little repercussion. The low duration of Ash’s Ultimate and its one-way nature makes it incredibly unlikely for enemies to follow your squad if you end up being sent back to the Totem.

* Valkyrie or Octane * Though Ash’s Ultimate offers some mobility this pales in comparison to Valkyrie’s Skyward Dive. For maximum synergy, Ash would need to use her Passive to seek out engagements with unsuspecting enemies. Valkyrie’s Ultimate would then get the team there quickly to face off with the opposing squad. Similarly, Octane’s Launch Pad can be used to make a dent in the distance between your team and nearby deathboxes. Once your team lands, Ash can place her Ultimate and cut the distance even further so you can rapidly rack up those kills.

Bangalore offers an all-around offensive threat that can be used in just about every scenario. Bangalore’s Tactical Smoke Launcher and her Double Time Passive help her escape difficult situations with ease while her Rolling Thunder Ultimate provides crowd control by suppressing enemy movement for a short period of time. Yet despite all of the tools in Bangalore’s kit, her smokes are perhaps the most underrated especially when paired with the Legends below.

Legends Compatible with Bangalore
* Bloodhound, Crypto, or Seer * The three Recon Legends above are some of the few characters capable of seeing through Bangalore’s thick smoke grenades. By smoking an area the enemy team will essentially be fighting blind while your team will have the benefit of Recon abilities that’ll help you track them down. This can be especially strong in close quarters and in the final circle.
* Still, not all of these Recon Legends are built alike. Crypto is the least favorable choice as he requires the aid of his drone to spot enemies. This will essentially leave you in a 2v3 situation, though, Crypto’s Ultimate can break through enemy Shields. Seer and Bloodhound are better picks because they can spot enemies through Bangalore’s smoke with both their Tactical and Ultimate ability.
* Bloodhound is the best pairing of the three because their scan requires less aiming than Seer’s Tactical and their Ultimate grants them augmented speed.

Fuse has struggled to earn his spot in the meta but his Grenadier Passive is undoubtedly a mighty tool when paired with his arm cannon. It can be difficult to get value out of Fuse’s Knuckle Cluster in a lot of scenarios but his Ultimate is an effective zoning ability when used correctly.

Legends Compatible with Fuse
* Gibraltar * Gibraltar pairs well with Fuse both offensively and defensively. On the offensive end, if Fuse traps enemies within The Motherlode, Gibraltar can use his Defensive Bombardment Ult to inflict damage on an enemy squad or force them to hurt themselves by escaping through The Motherlode’s flames.
* Defensively, Fuse can throw his Ultimate near his team to enclose them in flames while Gibraltar can follow this up by placing his Dome of Protection over the squad. This added level of protection will detour enemies from pushing the Dome allowing for safer healing and revives.

* Horizon * Horizon’s Ultimate Black Hole sucks in enemies close enough to its placement. Black Hole also sucks in Grenades and this gives Fuse the perfect opportunity to volley in easy damage with his Tactical and with his large assortment of Grenades.

Horizon’s Tactical Gravity Lift offers a verticality, which on its own, sneakily places her amongst the best Offensive Legends in Apex. While her Ultimate takes 3 minutes to recharge, when used well it can set up significant damage on several players.

Legends Compatible with Horizon
* Fuse * As mentioned above, the combination of Black Hole and Fuse’s abilities are a fearsome combination. Not only does Black Hole suck in enemy players, making Knuckle Cluster as impactful as possible, but it also sucks in incoming Grenades.

* Wraith, Octane. or Ash * The following Offensive Legends have some mobility options that will be further enhanced by Horizon’s verticality. Pairing any of these Legends with Horizon will create a “run-and-gun” squad capable of taking favorable engagements on any terrain to stack up those Kills.

Mirage

Apex’s current balance makes every Legend viable in the hands of gifted players but Mirage and his clones have continually struggled to crack the meta. Mirage’s Tactical and Ultimate have both seen significant buffs since launch and when paired with the right Legends these abilities are enhanced to make him a more viable pick.

Legends Compatible with Mirage

The speedster Octane encourages aggressive gameplay and allows for safe retreats. This makes him a great selection for bloodthirsty players and players trying to Rank up in solo queue. As far as teamwork goes, Octane’s Launch Pad is one of the most effective team rotation methods in the game and it grants the ability to escape from or quickly land on unsuspecting enemies.

Legends Compatible with Octane
* Revenant * The pairing of Octane’s Ultimate and Revenant’s Ultimate is a match made in FPS heaven. Revenant’s Death Totem essentially provides the team a second life so they can aggressively push a squad with Octane’s Launch Pad. Though Revenant’s Death Totem can be destroyed and place your team in harm’s way it should be out of reach if you use the Death Totem prior to hitting the jump pad.

* Bloodhound or Seer * Simply put, both of these Recon Legends serve to amplify Octane’s aggression by giving him nearby targets to pursue. This is perfect when jumping in as a third party or when attacking vulnerable squads that are low on health or attempting to revive.

Legends Compatible with Revenant
* Octane or Ash * As described in their corresponding sections, Ash and Octane possess movement-centric skills that pair well with Revenant’s Ultimate Death Totem. Both Ash’s and Octane’s Ultimates allow for hyper-aggressive play after interacting with the Death Totem while not rotating teammates too far. This is crucial as Death Totem has a set range that, when surpassed, causes you and your teammates to exit shadow form and leaves you vulnerable to being knocked.

* Lifeline * Once Death Totem is used, if you or your teammates are knocked in shadow form you’ll be sent back to the Totem with 50 health and the same Shield you started with. Having a Lifeline makes it easy to quickly make up your 50 missing health. Lifeline can throw out her Tactical whenever she’s sent back to the Totem and it’ll heal all nearby teammates.

Wraith

The Interdimensional Skirmisher has inarguably been one of the most consistent Legends in Apex despite Respawn adding 11 new Legends since launch. Another fantastic solo queue selection, Wraith’s Into the Void Tactical provides some decent escapability but it’s far from a get-out-of-jail-free card due to its 1.25-second animation before making you invulnerable. Wraith has perpetually had a high-pick rate and that’s in large part due to her Dimensional Rift that grants mobility and temporary invulnerability to teammates with no movement abilities.

Legends Compatible with Wraith
* Revenant + Caustic * Despite sounding like a broken record, Wraith’s Ultimate pairs well with Revenant’s Ultimate as it inherently allows your team a free push. However, Wraith’s portal makes it incredibly easy for enemies to pursue you back to the Death Totem’s placement. That’s where Caustic comes in. A few Nox Gas Traps placed on your end of the portal will slow and damage any enemies that try to come through.

* Lifeline * After taking severe damage on an aggressive push, Wraith’s Tactical often grants her enough invulnerability to return to the safety of her squad. If a Lifeline Heal Drone awaits the Offensive Legend, Wraith can quickly get to max health and return to the fight. On the other end of this symbiotic relationship, Wraith’s Dimensional Rift gives Lifeline some safe mobility which she desperately needs.

Caustic

Caustic and his traps force enemies to take engagements in unfavorable situations especially when battling indoors. Caustic’s Fortify Passive helps him take less damage and his Tactical Nox Traps help him control buildings, act as revive cover, and provide Recon. While he won’t be the flashiest pick Caustic is a great situational Legend that is an X-factor in close quarters.

Legends Compatible with Caustic
* Lifeline * When bunkered with Caustic you can often find yourself in poke battles where your squad and enemies continually trade damage. Lifeline’s drone enables your squad to use fewer resources while focusing on inflicting damage instead of healing.

* Bloodhound * Bloodhound’s Scan enables you and your teammates to see enemies through Caustic’s Nox Gas. Caustic gas once slowed teammates as well as enemies but this is no longer the case giving you a decisive advantage if you can track enemy movement.

Gibraltar

Out of all the Legends in Apex, Gibraltar is the greatest facilitator. His Dome of Protection may be the most impactful Tactical in the game as it allows for safe healing and safe revives. Gibraltar makes every other Legend better and he can basically be plugged into just about any team composition and enhance the squad.

Legends Compatible with Gibraltar
* Lifeline * Once Gibraltar’s Dome of Protection is placed a Lifeline teammate can help your squad heal while you focus on recovering any lost shields.

Apex’s preeminent modder is a Defensive Legend with an affinity for Light Machine Guns (LMGs). Reworked from her launch, Rampart’s Ultimate Sheila is now portable effectively putting a death machine in your hands.

Legends Compatible with Rampart
* Caustic * Rampart’s Tactical Amped Cover and Ultimate Mobile Minigun can be used to completely bunker down enclosed spaces. To further enhance this, add Caustic to the squad so his traps can slow and damage enemies while providing valuable intel.

* Octane * One of Rampart’s greatest weaknesses is her complete lack of mobility. Pairing her with Octane’s Launch Pad, which charges fairly quickly, will help the flat-footed Legend escape when necessary. When Rampart has her Sheila Ultimate active she can use the Pad to close the gap between her and enemies so you can begin raining in the damage.

Wattson

Wattson is a true Defensive Legend that excels in securing positioning. Much like Caustic, she can quickly dominate enclosed spaces and her Interception Pylon Ultimate repairs your team’s shields while eating up various projectiles and abilities. If you’re looking for a methodical gameplay experience, Wattson may just be your best choice.

Legends Compatible with Wattson
* Lifeline * Similar to Caustic, if Wattson and her teammates bunker up the group healing Lifeline can provide is invaluable. Lifeline’s healing can then be paired with Wattson’s Ultimate Interception Pylon that will replenish your shields. The passive regeneration of both health and shield will keep your team healthy and ready for a fight.

Lifeline

Lifeline can be effectively placed into any composition. Her healing ability is currently unique to Apex, aside from Wattson’s Ultimate repairing shields. You should feel comfortable selecting Lifeline no matter your team and she’s a great pick for beginners since she doesn’t have any complex abilities and she can provide value through her heals if you’re racking up kills quite yet.

Legends Compatible with Lifeline
* Ash, Octane, or Wraith * Lifeline lacks mobility and to survive especially hectic fights she will greatly benefit from having teammates with group mobility.

Loba

Everyone’s favorite thief is a Support Legend that helps your team safely loot a large area with her Ultimate ability, Black Market Boutique. Loba is a fairly easy Legend to navigate as two out of three of her abilities are loot-centric. Her Tactical can help her escape stick situations and provides some individual verticality. Loba’s Passive makes her a compelling solo queue pick that’ll help you deck out your loadout in a flash.

Legends Compatible with Loba
Bloodhound

Bloodhound is another Legend that is pretty much plug-and-play no matter the composition around them. Bloodhound’s Recon abilities are incredibly strong and they’ll help your squad hunt down enemies in any situation. Because Bloodhound is such a strong team-centric Legend you should feel comfortable adding them to any lineup. Bloodhound has minimal mobility in the form of the speed boost they get when using their Ultimate Beast of the Hunt.

Legends Compatible with Bloodhound
* Ash, Octane, or Wraith * Bloodhound has minimal mobility and they can often find it difficult to push a team over long distances or effectively retreat without assistance. Ash, Octane, and Wraith all have Ultimates that offer the entire squad enhanced mobility which makes Bloodhound much more effective.

Crypto is a Legend that seems simple but has a deceptively high skill ceiling. His Surveillance Drone is incredibly versatile and outside of its obvious Recon value, his Drone can notably recover your teammates’ banners and revive them at Respawn Beacons. Still, Crypto is vulnerable when using his Drone so he is most powerful when used within a team that is coordinated and preferably one that can communicate well.

Legends Compatible with Crypto
* Bloodhound * While Crypto uses his Drone to gain intel from afar he leaves your team in what is essentially a 2v3 scenario if a full squad arrives unexpectedly. While Crypto can always exit his Drone it can be difficult to do so before taking damage when a squad sneaks up on you. Bloodhound’s Eye of the All Father Tactical will help the two remaining teammates stay safe and if anyone is detected they can communicate with Crypto to get him geared up before it’s too late.

* Octane * A more offensive pairing is Octane whose Launch Pad pairs well with so many abilities including Crypto’s Drone. Once Crypto identifies an enemy team that you want to take on, Octane’s Launch Pad will help you get to them quickly and aggressively. If Crypto uses his Ultimate Drone EMP on enemies they’ll take shield damage which then makes for easy follow-up opportunities after your squad pushes with Octane’s Ult.

Pathfinder

Pathfinder is both a loveable robot and one of the most dynamic Legends in Apex. Though he’s a Recon Legend he arguably plays more like an Offensive Legend as his grapple makes an absolute menace on the battlefield.

Legends Compatible with Pathfinder
* Wraith, Ash, or Octane * Despite his clunky exterior Pathfinder is a bonafide playmaker and when matched with high-aggression Legends like Wraith, Ash, or Octane your team will quickly amass high damage, high kill games. When in solo queue all of these Legends have a high level of self-sufficiency as their movement abilities greatly increase their survivability.

* Wattson * Pathfinder’s Ultimate Zipline Gun enables you and your team to reach and hold elevated positions. The only problem is enemies can use the same ziplines to push you. While it can be quite easy to beam anyone who tries to push your squad this way, Wattson fences make it nearly impossible for enemies to contest your high ground. Just place Wattson’s Perimeter Security at the end of the zipline to ensure that no one can come through unscathed.

Seer

Seer is one of the more viable Recon Legends in the game and his Exhibit Ultimate ability can singlehandedly help your team win fights in the final circle. While Bloodhound is still stronger in many scenarios, the fact that Seer’s abilities show enemy health bars makes them perfect for determining whether or not to engage an enemy squad.

Legends Compatible with Seer
* Bloodhound * Though it may sound like overkill, combining Seer with Bloodhound gives your team a giant edge during gunfights. Communicate with your teammates to cycle your abilities and you’ll be able to track your foes for a prolonged period of time. Seer’s Tactical can also prevent enemies from healing and Bloodhound’s Scan can quickly find these enemies to make sure Seer knows where to fire that Tactical.

* Bangalore

Valkyrie

Valkyrie’s

high-flying abilities make her an offensive force with few weaknesses. Valkyrie has good personal and team-wide mobility, her Passive provides vital information when skydiving, and her unparalleled verticality helps her gain the upper hand on just about any enemy.

Legends Compatible with Valkyrie
* Gibraltar * While Valkyrie’s Ultimate is an insanely powerful movement tool it can easily be canceled by incoming damage. Gibraltar can void the threat of cancelation with his Dome of Protection that’ll all but ensure a safe takeoff.

* Ash * Ash’s can detect the location of nearby deathboxes as well as interact with deathboxes to locate surviving attackers. Though Valkyrie is the Recon Legend in this pairing, it’s Ash’s intel that will help locate engagements and Valkyrie’s Skyward Dive can help you aggressively push these engagements.
