Breast Cancer Awareness Month Learning From Celebrities
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time dedicated to raising awareness for breast cancer.
The goal of the month is to help patients of past, present, and future through the emotional, physical, and financial struggles that breast cancer induces. The aim is to share facts, tips, advice, and stories, all in the hopes of lending support to those suffering (or who have suffered) indirectly and directly from breast cancer.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to spread some inspiration by talking about two celebrities who went through the struggles of breast cancer and won: Angelina Jolie and Robin Roberts. With each story, we’ve included what you can learn from their experiences, so that you too can win and share your story.
May these real-life stories help you to find courage for yourself, your family, and your friends.
Angelina Jolie’s Cancer Awareness Story
First on our list is the marvelous Angelina Jolie- actress, producer, and director.
Before undergoing any testing, Angelina was already aware that she had a family history of breast cancer. With this crucial information in mind, Angelina made the well-informed decision to get genetically tested. The results of her testing showed that Angelina was positive for BRCA1 gene mutation.
The BRCA1 gene is responsible for helping to repair damaged DNA. Thus, a mutation in this gene often results in the body being unable to repair DNA damages that occur. Bodies that are unable to repair its cells are more likely to have further genetic complications down the road, and a higher risk of cancer.
In her late thirties, Angelina chose to undergo a double mastectomy in order to significantly reduce her risk of developing breast cancer.
By being cognizant of her genetic history, getting genetically tested, and taking steps to reduce her risk of the disease, Angelina was able to win her battle with breast cancer.
What you can learn from Angelina’s story:
* Know your family history.
* Get tested early.
* Learn about preventative measures.
* Make informed decisions.
Robin Roberts’ Cancer Awareness Story
Co-anchor of Good Morning America, Robin Robert is a passionate advocate for breast cancer awareness. Robin’s own story began in 2007, when she was conducting a self-examination and discovered a lump in one of her breasts. Robin immediately went for testing- getting an ultrasound and biopsy conducted. The test results confirmed the lump in Robin’s breast to be an extremely aggressive kind of cancer known as triple-negative breast cancer.
As its name suggests, triple-negative breast cancer tests negative for three things: estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and a surplus of HER2 protein. Essentially, triple-negative breast cancer is not fed by estrogen, progesterone, or HER2 protein, and therefore cannot be killed/removed through normal hormonal therapy treatment.
For Robin, this meant having to undergo extensive cancer treatment including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and a lumpectomy.
What you can learn from Robin’s story:
* Conduct regular breast self-examinations.
* Be aware of the different breast cancer treatments.
* Never lose hope.
