Soothing Phrases You Can Use To Help Someone With Anxiety

Misbah has done her Bachelor’s degree in psychology. She has access to a wide range of mental health experts who treat mental illness.

It is difficult to provide proper assistance or support to a person suffering from anxiety. When one tries, the results are often the opposite: The person worsens. Why?

First and foremost, it must be acknowledged that good intentions are not enough and that a person with anxiety is incapable of thinking or acting logically. They might not be as mentally healthy as you are. Do you wish to lend a helping hand?

In this article, we will discuss some phrases that you can say to someone who is suffering from anxiety.

You don’t get them, you don’t get what’s going on with them, and you don’t get why they’re trapped and paralyzed if nothing significant happened to them. You only know that the person suffering from anxiety is in pain, and you want to help them, but it appears that your efforts are merely prolonging their pain. Do you truly wish to assist? Arm yourself, especially with two things: Empathy and tolerance.

Empathy is the ability to put yourself in the shoes of another person, even if you are unaware of what is going on. And patience, because there are no magic words or magical cures that can instantly cure their anxiety problems.

What do you say to someone who has lost hope, feels lost, and can’t seem to find a way forward? What can you say to someone who is physically and psychologically tired and has no desire to accomplish anything other than surviving another day?

Anxiety can change a person’s thinking completely. Everything takes a negative spin and becomes a possible threat. That person gets tired of dealing with anxiety. Inside, there’s a lot of uneasiness, a lot of loss of control, and a lot of doubts. And above all, there are a lot of physical signs of anxiety, such as a rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, and obsessive thoughts, which prevent the sufferer from forgetting about the illness.

Phrases That Can Be Said to Help Someone With Anxiety
You don’t have to come up with an explanation for their situation; just understand that’s what it is. Maybe counseling them to relax, that nothing bad is going on with them, or asking to approach life differently just makes them feel worse.

Don’t tell them what you would have done if you were in their situation. The person suffering from anxiety is not interested in knowing that and they cannot think logically. So it’s time for you to switch gears and use the finest words for calming and relieving an anxious individual.

I am here to help you with whatever you need.

Don’t just leave the person alone with this single statement. Try to hear them. Make them feel you truly want to help. The demands of a person suffering from anxiety may surprise you, so provide your assistance without judging what is better or worse for that individual. Listen to them carefully.

Do you want to talk?

People with anxiety sometimes want to talk about what they are feeling. The general feeling is one of confusion, so it is good to put your emotions and thoughts in order by talking to someone suffering from anxiety. But keep in mind that the next moment they may be so emotionally overwhelmed that they don’t want to talk.

You need to watch and observe when they feel it is easy for them to share their feelings with you and when not. Do not force them to talk. Always be patient and show them that you care and love them. Always listen to them carefully so that they can feel you care and not judging them. An anxious person always doubts that others are judging them, never make them feel this way.

I love you, you can trust me.

We always feel pleased and relaxed when we know we are loved and cared for, according to human psychology. It is very important for the anxious person to feel that they are loved, that they can trust you with everything, and that you would assist them. Tell them you are always there for them, that you love them, and that they can always rely on you.

Let them feel you as a caring and helpful person so that they may express their thoughts with you without feeling embarrassed.

Cry all you want.

Uncontrollable crying is a very evident symptom of anxiety. Don’t ask them why they’re crying; they might not know. Let them know that they are free to cry in your presence and that it will not disturb you.

The fear will go away, I am always with you.

Fear that they will never be able to overcome anxiety, fear of fatalistic ideas, fear of anxiety symptoms, fear of fear. This is how a person with anxiety feels, and you need to assure them that you will experience the fear with them. Tell them they are not alone. You will be walking with them throughout and will never leave their side ever. Assure them with your kind words that you are always there.

You are not alone, I am with you

Where would you feel most comfortable?

When making a plan to get out of the house, keep in mind the fear we discussed before. Not all places are appropriate for someone who suffers from anxiety, particularly if there are a lot of people or a lot of noise. Allow them to choose where they feel most at ease. Ask them if they feel comfortable going there?

Whether you believe it or not, you are secure now, and this will pass.

This expression represents a ray of hope at the end of the tunnel. Give it to them without putting any pressure on them, without criticizing them, and without blaming them for their mistakes. But offer it to them with assurance, so they know they’ll be secure with you and that, sooner or later, they’ll be able to conquer their worries.

Last Thoughts
We all have a role to play in eliminating the stigma associated with mental illness. As a caregiver, you are in a unique position to do this by engaging the person you care about with patience and love.

Be patient with them and let them feel your love, but set boundaries to protect yourself as a person and as a caregiver. Don’t create your own anxiety by restricting your actions and behaviors. Self-care is also important in helping them.

It is recommended to consult a health or mental health professional and discuss the patient’s mental health.

Thank you so much for your very kind and generous comment, Bredz. I wish people could understand of what the anxiety sufferers feels like. To help them and feel their pain is important. A good counseling and words of love from friends and family can help a lot the sufferers to release the pain they’re carrying in but this does need a lot of empathy and patience. A lot of us lack in here, I believe. Take care and stay healthy!!

Blessings and Love, dear friend.

Thank you so much for your very kind comments and for sharing your thoughts with me, Teodora. Greatly appreciated, dear friend. All the anxiety sufferers need is to be understood and loved. Sadly and unfortunately very less people really care but I have seen many people who love to support such people. In such cases, family and friends can help a lot but again I would say it needs a lot of patience to handle such people and many don’t have that required patience. God bless you, dear friend.

Sending Love and Hugs.

Misbah

A great article with sound advice.

It’s hard for someone to reach out to others when he suffers from anxiety.

Simply just being there is a blessing.

Teodora Gheorghe on September 21, 2021:

As an anxiety sufferer, ‘Where would you feel most comfortable?’ is one of the questions that I would have liked to be asked more often… Not many people understand what we are going through, especially when agoraphobia is also involved. It is also difficult to put into words the complexities of anxiety disorders. In fact, no one can truly understand what anxiety sufferers are going through except for themselves. However, people who are empathetic by nature and really care for their loved ones CAN help them using these soothing phrases, by being there and making the anxiety sufferers feel loved and at least partially understood.

This is an excellent article, Misbah. I think it is very difficult to deal with someone who is distraught or upset. You don’t always have the right words.

I love all of your suggestions. I am going to forward this article to someone who is often dealing with this person who is so angry much of the time. I think it will be helpful.

Misbah, what a beautiful article. You have explained so very well what those who are hurting really need. Not suggestions, just an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on.

I think it is also helpful to let your loved one know that their words are safe; my Godson is going through a rough patch right now with his mom (dad is in the Army and is deployed halfway around the world). I let him know that he can tell me anything and it will be just between the two of us.
